Monarch Scarf

This is an incredibly easy scarf to knit - if you can cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, you can knit this. 

Finished Measurements:  50" long, 5" wide
Yarn: Berroco Palace (50% merino wool / 50% silk; 103 yds): 2 balls color #8919
Needles: US size 8  (5mm)
Gauge: 24 sts and 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Checkerboard Rib Stitch
Checkerboard Rib Stitch: 
Rows 1-12: *K4, P4; rep from * to end.
Rows 13-24: *P4, K4; rep from * to end.

Scarf:

Cast on 8 sts.

Row 1: K4, P4.

Continue knitting in rib for 11 more rows.

Row 13: P4, K4, cast on 4 sts.  (12 sts)

Row 14: K4, P4, K4.

Continue knitting in rib for 10 more rows.

Row 25: K4, P4, K4, cast on 4 sts.  (16 sts)

Row 26: K4, P4, K4, P4.

Continue knitting in rib for 10 more rows.

Row 37: *P4, K4; rep from * to end, cast on 4 sts.  (20 sts)

Row 38: K4, *P4, K4; rep from * to end.

Continue knitting in rib for 10 more rows.

Row 49: K4, * P4, K4; rep from * to end, cast on 4 sts.  (24 sts)

Row 50: *K4, P4; rep from * to end.

Continue knitting in rib for 10 more rows.

Row 61: *P4, K4; rep from * to end, cast on 4 sts.  (28 sts)

Row 62:  K4, *P4, K4; rep from * to end.

Continue knitting in rib for 10 more rows.

Row 73: K4, *P4, K4; rep from * to end, cast on 4 sts.  (32 sts)

Row 74: *K4, P4; rep from * to end.

Continue knitting in Checkerboard Rib stitch, counting rows 73 and 74 as rows 1 and 2 of pattern stitch.

Work a total of 7 repeats of the 24-row pattern.

Next row: Bind off 4 sts, P4, *K4, P4; rep from * to end.  (28 sts)

Continue knitting in rib for 11 more rows.

Next row: Bind off 4 sts, *P4, K4; rep from * to end.  (24 sts)

Continue knitting in rib for 11 more rows.

Next row: Bind off 4 sts, P4, *K4, P4; rep from * to end.  (20 sts)

Continue knitting in rib for 11 more rows.

Next row: Bind off 4 sts, P4, K4, P4, K4.  (16 sts)
